: Egyptian leader in Iran for first time since 1979

Image
Egyptian President Mohammad Mursi arrived in Tehran on Thursday, the first Egyptian leader to visit Iran since its Islamic revolution in 1979. Iranian state television broadcast live pictures of Mursi's red-carpet welcome at Tehran's Mehrabad airport. He was to attend a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement that concludes on Friday. Iran has presented its tenure of the movement as the failure of the United States to isolate it from the rest of the world, a message its most powerful figure, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will press home in an address to around 35 visiting heads of state on Thursday morning. Diplomatic relations between Cairo and Tehran broke down immediately after Iran's revolution over Egypt's support for the overthrown Shah and its peace agreement with Israel. As president, Mursi has so far refused to address the issue of whether ties would be upgraded with Iran, but has indicated he would pursue a more balanced foreign policy. Analysts say Mursi's brief

Egypt to detain former PM Shafik if he returns home

Image
Egyptian authorities will detain former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafik for questioning over an alleged corruption case if he returns from abroad, a judge said on Wednesday. Shafik, ousted President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, has been placed on a watch list at border points, Judge Osama el-Saeidy said in a statement. Shafik, who lost a presidential run-off vote against the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi in June, left Egypt for Abu Dhabi two days after his opponent was declared president. His aides have repeatedly denied Shafik is on the run, saying he would return soon to launch a new liberal political party, but the threat of arrest could deter him, analysts say. "The investigative judge decided to put General Ahmed Shafik's name on the watch and travel ban lists based on investigations over his illegal allocation of 40,000 square metres of land... to Alaa and Gamal Mubarak," Saeidy said. Mubarak's two sons Alaa and Gamal are now in priso

Ex-Somali PM must pay $21 million for alleged torture: US court

A former Somali prime minister denied diplomatic immunity must pay $21 million in damages to the victims of his alleged torture and human rights abuse, a U.S. federal court ruled on Tuesday. Mohamed Ali Samantar, who served as Somalia's defense minister in the 1980s and prime minister from 1987 to 1990, agreed in February to not contest the charges and accept liability for any damages against the seven plaintiffs - four individuals and three estates. The lawsuit, seeking financial damages from Samantar, was filed under the Torture Victim Protection Act in 2004 by a small group of Somalis who said they suffered torture or other abuses in their homeland by soldiers or other government officials under Samantar's general command. Samantar has lived in Virginia since 1997. Some of the plaintiffs are naturalized U.S. citizens. The case had been followed closely for its foreign policy implications. Granting immunity could allow foreign torturers in the United States to esc

Three killed in Kenya's Mombasa riots after cleric shot dead

Image
Two Kenyan police officers and a civilian were killed when rioters hurled a grenade at officers in the port city of Mombasa on Tuesday after two days of violence over the killing of a radical Muslim cleric. Mobs of youths had fired at police with machineguns just before throwing the grenade into a police truck, Benedict Kigen, a senior police intelligence officer said. The riots broke out on Monday after Aboud Rogo, accused by the United States of helping al Qaeda-linked Islamist militants in Somalia, was shot dead. Gunmen sprayed Rogo's car with bullets in an attack many Muslims in Mombasa blamed on the police, who denied involvement. Police said at least 16 police officers were wounded in the grenade attack in Kisauni, a predominantly Muslim area, where youths set two churches on fire and barricaded roads with burning tyres as the riots spread to the outskirts of Kenya's second-biggest city, a tourist hub and major Indian Ocean port. "These are pure criminals, and now

Somali parliament elects new speaker

Image
cabinet minister Mohamed Osman Jawaari was elected speaker of Somalia's parliament by a majority vote on Tuesday to lay the groundwork for a new government in the war-torn Horn of Africa country. The next step in a Western-backed plan to end two decades of strife is the election of a president charged with the task of rebuilding institutions plagued by corruption and infighting. Somalia has been mired in civil strife, grinding poverty, Islamist militancy and maritime piracy since warlords toppled military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, leaving the nation without an effective central government. Jawaari, a veteran politician and former transport minister under Barre who can speak and write in Arabic, English, Italian and Norwegian, won after the first round of voting. His closest rival Ali Khalif Galeyr bowed out of the race after conceding defeat just before the second round of voting. "I thank my friends who gave me the votes and all of you," Jawaari said, addin

AMISOM & Somali Troops Capture Marka

Image
Mogadishu - Somalia troops with the assistance of the African Union MissionTroops, have this morning pushed Al Qaeda-affiliated terrorists out of Marka, the third-largest port in Southern Somalia. The dawn operation met little resistance as the AMISOM and Somali National Army troops steadily advanced to Shalamboot and established a defensive position there.   Located 90 kilometres south of Mogadishu, Marka has been under the brutal rule of the extremists since November 2008. In recent months, many of the al Shabaab’s top commanders have been fleeing towards the town following a string of defeats by the allied forces. The capture of Marka is also critical for AMISOM future operations to liberate the city of Kismayo, the extremists’ largest source of illicit revenue.   This important achievement comes at a critical time for Somalia as the country’s newly inaugurated Parliament prepares to elect a Speaker and President for the country, and bring to a close 12 years of transitional

New Egypt leader steps out on world stage seeking "balance"

Image
Egypt's new Islamist president said on Monday he would pursue a "balanced" foreign policy, reassuring Israel its peace treaty was safe, hinting at a new approach to Iran and calling on Bashar al-Assad's allies to help lever the Syrian leader out. Mohamed Mursi, who was elected in June and consolidated his power this month by dismissing top military leaders, is seeking to introduce himself to a wider world ahead of a trip to Iran - the first by an Egyptian leader in three decades - and China. "Egypt is now a civilian state ... a national, democratic, constitutional, modern state," he told Reuters in his first interview with an international news organisation since taking office as the candidate of the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood. "International relations between all states are open and the basis for all relations is balance. We are not against anyone but we are for achieving our interests," said the U.S.-educated engineer, appearing confident

Kenyan cleric shot dead, sparks riots in Mombasa

Hundreds of protesters smashed cars and vandalised at least four churches in the Kenyan city of Mombasa on Monday after unknown gunmen shot dead a Muslim cleric accused by the United States of helping Islamist militants in neighbouring Somalia. Aboud Rogo Mohammed, who the United States accused of advocating the radicalisation and recruitment of non-Somali Africans by the al Shabaab militant group, was shot dead on Monday and buried shortly afterwards. Rogo was facing charges of planning acts of terror and importing illegal weapons. "He was driving in a personal car with other four other occupants. Unknown gunmen attacked his vehicle ... sprayed it with bullets and killed him on the spot," Robert Kitur, deputy police chief for the region said. "They must have been targeting him, and must have been trailing him for a while." Kenyan police fired rubber bullets in the air and teargas to disperse protesters in Mombasa, Kenya's main port city and a popular tourist d

Somalia must form new government, EU's Ashton says

Image
Somalia's leaders have shown a commitment to reform but must move to install a new government in the economically and politically fragile country, the EU's foreign policy chief said during a visit on Monday. Catherine Ashton's first visit to the war-ravaged country coincided with African Union driving Islamist militants from a port south of the capital. Ashton said she had frank discussions with the country's leaders a day ahead of an expected, though already delayed, vote for a new parliamentary speaker. That vote is seen as a crucial step towards the chamber electing a new president, the culmination of a reform process mired by allegations of intimidation, bribery and repeated setbacks. "What I've seen is real commitment, a recognition that the world is watching and an understanding that we need to see this process reach conclusion," Ashton told reporters in Mogadishu's heavily fortified airport. Since the outbreak of civil conflict in 1991 there

Analysis: South Africa mine killings could hurt Zuma ahead of vote

Image
African's President Jacob Zuma rose to power as a man of the people but seemed a world away from the masses when he stood in a suit under a parasol to speak to destitute miners about the deadliest police killing since apartheid ended. The deaths of 44 in a labor dispute this month at Lonmin's Marikana mine, including 34 armed miners shot by police, could undermine Zuma's populist appeal and threaten his chances in a December vote where he seeks re-election as the leader of the party that dominates politics. Zuma's critics say the day last week he spoke to miners for a few minutes under the blazing sun showed him more beholden to special interest groups than to millions of South Africans waiting for him to ease poverty. He took more time to speak to Lonmin's executives than miners and then left the mine to dance in front of cameras at a ruling African National Congress event, despite declaring a week of mourning. "Our government is becoming a pig that

Violence returns near Lonmin's S.Africa operations

Image
Violence has spread to the eastern operations of world No. 3 platinum producer Lonmin, the company said on Monday, raising concerns of deadly unrest flaring again after 44 people were killed this month in labour strife. "There have been incidents of intimidation towards bus drivers overnight as well as intimidation of Eastern's workers this morning, preventing them from coming to work," the company said in a statement. Lonmin, where most operations have been suspended for two weeks by a wage strike among about 3,000 of its workers, also said only about 13 percent of its 28,000-strong workforce has shown up on Monday morning. This is far short of the numbers needed to start pulling ore from the earth again. Trade union Solidarity, which represents skilled workers, also reported high levels of intimidation. In another development, workers at a mine run by junior producer Eastern Platinum in South Africa were blocked on Monday from going to their posts by people belie

UN Sanctions Kenyan National Over Support for Terror Groups

Image
The United Nations Security Council said it added Abubaker Shariff Ahmed to a list of people subject to travel bans, asset freezes and targeted arms embargoes for supporting extremist groups. Ahmed, a Kenyan national, has been a leading facilitator and recruiter of young Kenyan Muslims for militant activity in Somalia, the council said in a statement on its website. He has told male worshippers at mosques in the port city of Mombasa to travel to Somalia and commit acts of violence on behalf of al- Qaeda including killing U.S. citizens, it said. “He provides material support to extremist groups in Kenya and elsewhere in East Africa,” the council said. “Through his frequent trips to al-Shabaab strongholds in Somalia, including Kismayo, he has been able to maintain strong ties with senior al-Shabaab members.” Al-Shabaab, which has ties to al-Qaeda, has led an insurgency against Somalia’s UN-backed government for the past five years, and still controls swathes of territory in the south

Kenya police arrest 9 community leaders after clashes kill 53

Kenyan police have arrested five clan leaders and four chiefs in connection with an attack that killed 53 people in a long-running dispute over land and water in a rural part of the east of the country, a senior provincial official said on Friday. Armed with machetes, bows and arrows and spears, attackers from the Pokomo ethnic group locked villagers from the rival Orma group in their homes, set the structures alight and killed anyone who tried to escape late on Tuesday. Settled Pokomo farmers and semi-nomadic Orma pastoralists have clashed intermittently for years over access to grazing, farm land and water resources. Samuel Kilele, government commissioner for Coast province, told reporters in the port city of Mombasa the arrested elders are accused of organising and leading the raid and the chiefs of failing to alert authorities about the planned attacks. "They had prior information which they did not share with us so that we could intervene before the attacks occurred. We
