Iran warships leave Sudan after four-day stay

Image
wo Iranian warships left Sudan on Wednesday after a visit that drew attention to the countries' military ties less than a week after Khartoum accused Israel of bombing a Sudanese arms factory. Israel accuses the Muslim East African country of channelling weapons to the Gaza Strip, controlled by Iran's ally Hamas, via Egypt's Sinai desert - a charge Khartoum denies. Last week, a fire at the Yarmouk munitions plant in the south of Khartoum killed four people, and Sudan said an Israeli air strike was behind the blast. Israel has not commented on the fire. Two Iranian warships docked in Port Sudan several days after the blast, triggering speculation the events were related. Sudan denied this, saying the warships were on a "routine" visit. The two ships - a helicopter carrier and a destroyer - departed on Wednesday after a four-day stay. "Today was the last day and we came to bid them farewell," said Sudanese navy officer Omer Al-Farouq, standing on t

Egypt, IMF resume talks over $4.8 bln loan

Image
The Egyptian government resumed negotiations on Wednesday with the International Monetary Fund on a loan to help the country shore up public finances that have haemorrhaged since its popular uprising. Many foreign investors are waiting for an IMF agreement before venturing back to Egypt. Cairo has asked for a $4.8 billion loan, but officials have said it might seek more. An IMF team, which held an initial round of talks with the new government of President Mohamed Mursi in late August, returned to Cairo on Tuesday. Various Egyptian governments have been negotiating for an IMF loan for the last year and a half. "The talks started with the Egyptian authorities," IMF spokeswoman Wafa Amr told Reuters, without giving details. Presidential spokesman Yasser Ali said Egypt had presented its programme of economic reforms to the IMF, also giving no details. His comments were carried on a website of the Muslim Brotherhood, the group that propelled Mursi to power. The gove

Kenya, Uganda inflation falls point to more rate cuts

Image
Inflation rates in Kenya and Uganda fell in October, helped by easing food prices, creating room for further interest rate cuts to spur growth in east Africa's number one and three economies. Inflation has tumbled across east Africa's main economies this year after central banks slammed on the monetary brakes in the second half of 2011 to curb runaway prices that were driven by soaring food and fuel costs and ailing local currencies. With inflation now below target in both Kenya and Uganda, there is growing pressure on policymakers to turn their attention to growth, which has been dampened by the huge cost of credit after rate hikes. Both Nairobi and Kampala, however, will be mindful of their fragile currencies. Kenya's headline inflation rate fell more than expected to 4.14 percent in October from 5.32 percent the previous month. In Uganda, inflation slowed to 4.5 percent from a revised 5.5 percent in September. In both countries, the rates were driven lower by

Kenya inflation seen down in October, fuel prices a worry

Image
Kenya's year-on-year inflation is expected to fall for the 11th month running in October, helped by a better harvest easing food prices but offset to some extent by rising fuel costs. Despite the signs that inflation could be close to bottoming out, analysts think the central bank has scope to keep easing interest rates as attention shifts to supporting economic growth. Eight out of 11 analysts polled by Reuters predicted inflation would decline in October, with a median estimate of 4.88 percent, down from 5.32 percent in September. Forecasts ranged from 3.60 percent to 6.00 percent. The data is due on October 31. "Inflation is nearing the bottom in the current cycle. While fuel price increases may dampen the downward pressure on inflation, low food inflation is still likely to over-ride them," said Mbiyo Phumelele, head of macroeconomic research at CFC Stanbic Bank. Kenya's Energy Regulatory Commission raised pump prices for the second straight month during

Egypt church moves closer to picking new pope

Image
A vote to help choose a pope for Egypt's Coptic Orthodox church began on Monday in a process the minority Christians hope will deliver a leader to guide them safely through the upheaval of the Arab Spring. The previous incumbent, Pope Shenouda III, had led the church for four decades until his death in March at the age of 88. His successor will assume the post in a fast-changing Egypt where long oppressed Islamists are now in power - a major shift that is a source of alarm for the minority Christian community. About 2,400 people have the right to vote in Monday's ballot and must pick from a shortlist announced by the church on October 13 and which comprises two bishops and three monks aged between 49 and 70. Picked by the church, the voters include leading members of the church, public figures and a handful of representatives of the Ethiopian Church, which has historic links to the church in Egypt. The three most popular candidates go forward to the November 4 draw which

Residents blocked from returning to captured Libyan town

Image
Thousands of Libyans who fled fighting in the former Gaddafi stronghold of Bani Walid will not be allowed to return home for several more days until work was complete to make the town safe and restore services, officials said on Monday. Militias aligned with the defence ministry took control of Bani Walid - one of the last towns to fall to rebels in last year's war - on Wednesday after fighting that has underlined the weakness of central authority a year after dictator Muammar Gaddafi was deposed. The violence sent thousands fleeing from the hilltop town of 70,000 people in scenes reminiscent of last year's war. Uncertain of the damage their homes may have sustained, some have tried to go back - however the town remains closed off as security forces and officials say they are working on making it safe and restoring water, electricity and communications. "We want to make sure there isn't anything left over from the military operation. Services were destroyed

Bashir to visit South Sudan in first trip since secession

Image
Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir will visit South Sudan soon, his first trip since the south gained independence last year, to forge a new start in relations, Sudan's Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti told the state news agency on Saturday. Last month, Sudan and South Sudan agreed to end hostilities, restart southern oil exports through the north and revive cross-border trade, after both came close to war in April. The foreign minister gave no date but officials said the visit could be in early November. The African neighbours have yet to sort out ownership of several disputed areas along the unmarked border but tensions have ebbed in the past few months. Karti said Bashir's visit will be a "new start in relations between Sudan and South Sudan", SUNA said. Bashir was last in Juba at South Sudan's independence ceremony on July 9, 2011. Both leaders had planned to hold a summit in Juba in April but Sudan cancelled it after fighting broke out at the

Satellite images suggest Sudan arms factory was bombed: group

Image
Analysis of satellite imagery of a Sudanese munitions factory that Khartoum accused Israel of bombing earlier this week suggests the site may have been hit with aerial bombardment as Sudan claims, a monitoring group said on Saturday. The Satellite Sentinel Project, whose founders include Hollywood actor George Clooney and the Enough Project, said it conducted a comparative analysis of DigitalGlobe imagery of the arms factory in Khartoum, where a huge explosion on Tuesday killed two people and caused a large fire. "The imagery shows six large craters, each approximately 16 meters across and consistent with impact craters created by air-delivered munitions, centered in a location where, until recently, some 40 shipping containers had been stacked," the group said a statement. "An October 12 image shows the storage containers stacked next to a 60-meter-long shed," it said. "While (Sentinel) cannot confirm that the containers remained on the site on October 2

MOMBASA Two militant suspects killed in police raid on Kenyan coas

Image
Kenyan police shot dead a Muslim cleric suspected of ties to Somalia's al Shabaab militants in the city of Mombasa on Sunday, the latest in a string of raids against alleged sympathisers of the Islamist militants along the east African coast. Local residents said gunfire erupted in the early hours when police broke into Omar Faraj's house in the city's rundown Majengo district, the same area where the radical preacher Aboud Rogo, shot dead in August by unknown gunmen, held sermons. Riot police patrolled Majengo's garbage-clogged streets and tensions ran high in the morning, raising fears of a repeat of the deadly rioting that broke out after Rogo's killing. Police said a man arrested on Saturday carrying grenades on a bus to Mombasa had led them to Faraj's house. He was also killed by gunfire during the raid, police said, without explaining the exact circumstances. Neighbours said they collected dozens of spent bullet cartridges and tear gas canisters. &

Suicide bomber kills 8, injures 100 in Nigerian church

Image
A suicide bomber drove a jeep packed with explosives into a Catholic church in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least eight people, injuring more than 100 and triggering reprisal attacks that killed at least two more, officials said. The bomber drove right into the packed St Rita's church in the Malali area of Kaduna, a volatile ethnically and religiously mixed city, in the morning, witnesses said. A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Yushua Shuaib said eight people had been confirmed killed and more than 100 injured. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Islamist sect Boko Haram has claimed similar attacks in the past and has attacked several churches with bombs and guns as it intensified its campaign against Christians in the past year. "The heavy explosion also damaged so many buildings around the area," said survivor Linus Lighthouse. A wall of the church was blasted open and scorched black, with debris lying aroun

AngloGold says Tanzania law changes worry investors

Image
Tanzania should stick to existing agreements in the fast-growing mining sector or investors will lose confidence, the company which owns the country's biggest gold mine said on Saturday. Major international miners are still in talks with the government two years after it passed mining legislation that included a rise in royalties on gold exports to 4 percent of gross value from 3 percent of netback value. The law also required mining companies to pay the government 0.3 percent of their annual turnover, up from the previous requirement of a maximum $200,000 a year. AngloGold Ashanti told Reuters it expected the Dodoma government to respect its mineral development agreement, which it said was a legal contract signed before the new mining legislation was put in place. "Our investors obviously expect that those contracts should be honoured because they've made an investment for the long term," Gary Davies, managing director of AngloGold's Geita gold mine s
