New internet laws have come into force in Russia, making it easier for the state to block access to certain online content it considers offensive. The Russian government says the laws are vital for getting tough on child pornography and cybercrime, but members of the opposition say it is just another ploy by the government to crack down on civil liberties and silence dissent. French and Malian soldiers have captured Timbuktu airport as they continue to re-take territory from al-Qaeda-linked rebels in Northern Mali. On Saturday, they claimed the city of Gao. Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland is with the troops and sent this update from the airport.
